In a Minute – Transitional Activities

Some days it can be crazy transitioning from Social Studies 8 to Language Arts 7. Students arriving. Students leaving. Students who were absent wanting to know what they missed. All accompanied by lots of noise!

It helps to have a simple activity written on the board to transition students from their last class to their next and it allows you a minute (ok, a second) to get organized. These riddles and questions are quick activities for students to work on for the first five minutes of every class. This will establish a routine for students and help you maintain your sanity.

It sounds simple, but it is amazing how effective it is. (P.S. If you don’t have time to write the riddles on the  board, have a student do it, but just make sure to keep the answer a secret.)

The “In a Minute” activity will be changed weekly. You can look through our archived material for any you may have missed. If you receive our RSS feed you will automatically be sent the weekly updates.

The Riddles

  1. There is only one kind of cheese that is made backwards – what is it?
    Answer: Edam

  2. Only one color, but not one size,
Stuck at the bottom, yet easily flies.
Present in sun, but not in rain,
Doing no harm, and feeling no pain.
    What is it?

          Answer: A shadow
